A Different Christmas Poem

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.

Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
Transforming the yard to a winter delight.
The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.

My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.

The sound wasn’t loud, and it wasn’t too near,
But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.
Perhaps just a cough, I didn’t quite know, Then the
sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.

My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door just to see who was near.
Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.

A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,
Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.

“What are you doing?” I asked without fear,
“Come in this moment, it’s freezing out here!
Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!”

For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts..
To the window that danced with a warm fire’s light
Then he sighed and he said “It’s really all right,
I’m out here by choice. I’m here every night.”

“It’s my duty to stand at the front of the line,
That separates you from the darkest of times.
No one had to ask or beg or implore me,
I’m proud to stand here like my fathers before me.
My Gramps died at ‘ Pearl on a day in December,”
Then he sighed, “That’s a Christmas ‘Gram always remembers.”

My dad stood his watch in the jungles of ‘ Nam ‘,
And now it is my turn and so, here I am.
I’ve not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures, he’s sure got her smile.

Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red, white, and blue… an American flag.
I can live through the cold and the being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home.

I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.
I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life with my sister and brother..

Who stand at the front against any and all,
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall.”
“So go back inside,” he said, “harbor no fright,
Your family is waiting and I’ll be all right.”

“But isn’t there something I can do, at the least,
“Give you money,” I asked, “or prepare you a feast?
It seems all too little for all that you’ve done,
For being away from your wife and your son.”

Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,
“Just tell us you love us, and never forget.
To fight for our rights back at home while we’re gone,
To stand your own watch, no matter how long.

For when we come home, either standing or dead,
To know you remember we fought and we bled.
Is payment enough, and with that we will trust,
That we mattered to you as you mattered to us.”

PLEASE, Would you do me the kind favor of sending this to as many people as you can? Christmas will be coming soon and some credit is due to our U.S. servicemen and women for our being able to celebrate these festivities. Let’s try in this small way to pay a tiny bit of what we owe. Make people stop and think of our heroes, living and dead, who sacrificed themselves for us.

The biggest and best Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanza Digital Scrapbook Sale EVER:

It’s been quite a year for us at PrincessCrafts and you are one of the many that have made it one of the most enjoyable years we have ever had.  So, Kathy and I are doing something we have never done before to celebrate…

But only for the next 100 smart individuals that take advantage.

We have set our PrincessCrafts Platinum Annual (not available on the payment plan… Sorry) $97.00 membership so that instead of giving you one year, it gives the next 100 signups 3 Full years of unlimited access and unlimited downloads to every one of our 9 members areas.

You heard me right!

3 full years for the price of one!

That’s less than $33.00 a year or less than $2.70 a month.

Where else can you get access to more than 5000 digital scrapbook templates plus clipart plus headers plus bonuses plus more than 50 new digital templates added a month…?

Where else can you get all that for less than $2.70 a month just by paying up front?

I know the answer… It’s NOWHERE!

You can’t get that anywhere online or off. What’s more, you still get a full 8 weeks to check it all out and get a full refund if it’s not what you want.  So, there’s nothing to lose and everything to gain, isn’t there?

Just to show you how well we take care of our clients (scrapbook friends), any of our already hundreds of members are also elegible to take advantage of this offer since it’s even better then the 50% off they already get for renewals.

Any current Platinum or Gold member can signup for the $97.00 Platinum Annual membership and we’ll extend the 3 years to include any time that they currently have on their current membership. That means that our monthly payment members get an extra month added on and our annual members can get up to an extra 11 months added to the 3 years.

No one else on the Internet will do this…

Why would we do this?

Simple, we never let our current clients miss out or pay more than they absolutely have to. We want to be your best and trusted friends and not just another business on the Internet. We want lifetime friends.

But, you all need to hurry as we cannot do this for everyone. When the 100 spots are gone, the system will revert back to the reqular annual membership time and price.

Hope you’re one of the first 100…

Again, it’s totally risk free. You have a full 8 weeks to check it out. If it’s not what you need, just let us know and we’ll be happy to refund your full subscription. We can do this because we know that almost no one ever wants to give this up once they have it. You won’t either… So don’t wait and don’t miss out.

Again, only 100 slots and 1000s of people from around the world looking for just this kind of membership.

I expect over half to go almost instantly just from our current members.

So, tell your other half that you have found what you want for Christmas and there’s no wrapping required.

Thoughts for Thanksgiving…

Posted on November 22nd, 2007 by wwaddell.
Categories: My Thoughts.

Hi Scrapbook Friend,

On this day of thanks here in the USA, I wanted to share a special thank you to all of our military members that are not able to spend the day with their families as they are deployed in far away places protecting our freedom.

While it’s not always the most popular thing these days and whether you support the reasons that they are deployed or not… it’s important to remember that they are, in many cases, laying down their lives to defend your rights and freedom.

As a retired Air Force member, I would be remiss on this day of thanks and giving to not remember the men and women in uniform from many different countries that are serving away from home today.

My nephew is in IRAQ and I’m proud of him…

A young 15 year old girl created a video that pretty much says it all… it brought both smiles and tears to Kathy and I.

Thank You For All You Do,

Kathy & Wes

Updated Holiday Wishes for American Soldiers Info…

Posted on November 18th, 2007 by wwaddell.
Categories: My Thoughts, Site Information.

Hi Scrapbook Friend,

Thanks to Anne and her Retired husband for letting us know about the updated information.

Here’s what Military Public Affairs had to say in their latest Press Release:

The US Army has issued a warning of a holiday mail hoax:  Holiday Cards to Wounded and Recovering SoldiersTitle Holiday Cards to Wounded and Recovering Soldiers Walter Reed Army Medical Center officials want to remind those individuals who want to show their appreciation through mail to include packages, letters, and holiday cards addressed to ‘Any Wounded Soldier’ or ‘A Recovering American Soldier’ that Walter Reed cannot accept these packages in support of the decision by then Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Transportation Policy in 2001. This decision was made to ensure the safety and well being of patients and staff at medical centers throughout the Department of Defense.

In addition, the U.S. Postal Service is no longer accepting “Any Service Member” or “A Recovering American Soldier” letters or packages. Mail to “Any Service Member” that is deposited into a collection box will not be delivered.

Instead of sending an “Any Wounded Soldier” letter or package to Walter Reed, please consider making a donation to one of the more than 300 nonprofit organizations dedicated to helping our troops and their families listed on the “America Supports You” website, www.americasupportsyou.mil

Other organizations that offer means of showing your support for our troops or assist wounded servicemembers and their families include:http://www.usocares.org/

http://www4.army.mil/ocpa/tooursoldiers/http://www.redcross.org

For individuals without computer access, your local military installation, the local National Guard or military reserve unit in your area may offer the best alternative to show your support to our returning troops and their families. Walter Reed Army Medical Center will continue to receive process and deliver all mail that is addressed to a specific individual. As Walter Reed continues to enhance the medical care and processes for our returning service members, it must also must keep our patients and staff members safe while following Department of Defense policy. The outpouring of encouragement from the general public, corporate America and civic groups throughout the past year has been incredible. Our Warriors in Transition are amazed at the thanks and support they receive from their countrymen.

————————————————————-

While we can’t just mail them,  as you can see, it’s easy to show our support and our thanks for the Freedom that they defend this holiday season.  And, be sure and thank them personally when you see them in town and traveling.

Happy Scrappin

Kathy and Wes
