Scrapbook Tips: #1 Themes

Scrapbook Tips:                  

1.       Page Theme

The theme of your scrapbook can be simple or complex. Your theme could be a special event such as a birthday, a baby shower, a summer wedding, Christmas, or Halloween. Themes can also be personalized to the scrap book recipient’s special interests. Special interest themes include your favorite colors, his favorite sports photos, your kids favorite television programs or  music video artist, your last camping trip in the great outdoors, or even some of your cultural influences.

Ask yourself 3 simple questions before you begin your next computer scrapbook project:

 - What is the overall purpose for your scrapbook?

 - Who is the scrapbook for?

-  Who or what  is the scrapbook about?

The answers to these three simple questions are all factors in selecting an appropriate scrapbook theme.

For instance, the scrapbook you are giving your nephew as he graduates from law school is probably completely different than the grandparent book you send your mother-inlaw. Your nephew will probably appreciate a scrapbook with photographs from school, poems, journals, and more masculine styled embellishments. Perhaps, the theme of the scrapbook could be court rooms and law libraries. You could create embellishments that looked like gavels and white wigs around various pictures of your nephew during his college years.

Your mother-in-law, on the other hand, will love a multitude of baby pictures fancifully embellished with toy blocks, ribbon, and baby fingerprints. The theme of this book will probably be your husbands childhood. Photographs could include baby and grandma with the baby as well as photos of his childhood days. A nice journal about your husband’s most cherished childhood memories could also add a nice touch.

The key here is to have a consistent theme for you scrapbook in mind before you start.  When your scrapbook tells a specific story from start to finish, it becomes a treasured memory of it’s own.

5 Easy Scrapbook Tips

1.  Most flowers & plants are not scrapbook safe – even dried. They contain acids, and harmful gases.  If you are going to place them in your scrapbook with photos, be sure and seal them in an air tight bag or even better, coat them with a scrapbook safe clear spray coating.

2.  Use the dictionary as a journal prompt – writers block or hung up on what to say to open a new journaling note… open up the dictionary, close your eyes and choose a random word on the page.  Now, read the defenition (if you don’t know what it is) and start writing memories!

3.  What to do when scrapping with low-res or small photos (like the ones from your camera phone).  Easiest solution is to just print them small and use them that way. They’ll look much clearer and you can compensate with lots more photos on the page! The alternate solutions is to print them out small, then scan them at a very high resolution like 800 or 1200 ppi.  Then print the new scan as a larger size print.

4.  When making a mini scrapbook album by hand in a hurry, use the same structure on each page to speed up the hand scrap process. This will save you lots of time as you can cut out elements for each page in advance and all at once.  Of course, the better solution is to create the mini-scrapbook album digitally using digital scrapbook templates. This way, you can very the design of each page, but create the whole album in a fraction of the time it would take to do it with the old fashioned hand scrap process.

5.  My final scrapbook tip for today is to “just have fun.”  Sometimes you need to stop planning every little detail and just create intuitively as you go.  It may amaze you to put a stop watch to your planning process sometime and see just how much time it takes up for your scrapbooking.

Have we been busy or what?  As always, the free goodies are listed at the bottom, but you have got to check out all the great stuff we have been doing in our Scrapbook Members area too.

What’s going away soon:

I will be replacing the Father’s Day categories on both the 8.5×11 and 12×12 areas by the 31st of May.

We have already replaced the Mother’s Day category for Soft Expressions and Printable Pastels with brand new sets.

We also deleted all the Silhouettes and Memory Pockets from both the 8.5×11 and 12×12 areas. The new sets will go into the categories they belong with.

We will be removing the no-art templates from both the 8.5×11 and the 12×12 areas at the end of May also.  I will also be replacing the numbers category with individual number elements. 

What’s New:

Added 3 new Teddy Bear clipart in the Animal category.

Added 3 new sets of floral recipe cards to the journaling category for Mother’s Day and also added a new mom’s day alphabet in the Members Elements area.

Just added to Scrap of a Lifetime, our Landscape format area:

Baby 58 thru 63 along with Mom 37 thru 42 which match the newly added Baby 58 thru 63 and Mom 37 thru 39 we just put into our 8.5×11 and 12×12 areas.

We also just Added a new winter category to the Landscape)format area.

The FREE Goodies:

Replaced the free mini-scrapbook page on www.PrincessCrafts.com with a New Spring page.

I’ve also added some printable stickers, clipart and free scrapbook pages to our new www.FreeTravelScrapbook.info Travel BLOG, so be sure and book mark it and check back often.  We are adding free goodies with each article we publish there.

What’s still to come this month:
