10 Things to Keep in Mind about Baby Portrait Photography
1. Make sure that your camera has well charged batteries all the time and that your camera can be quickly and easily accessed. Life happens when we least expect it!
2. If you are traveling with your digital camera, it is best to have spare fully charged batteries ready to go.
3. Familiarize yourself with the use of shutter speeds and camera Flash modes. For many that means learning the different settings that today’s digital camera’s and smart phones posses for landscapes, portraits and fast action environments.
4. Do not be afraid to take ultra-close up photos of your babies using the zoom lens functions. Unless your child is asleep, it’s best not to try to use the macro functions on small children as this can scare them.
5. Try shooting candidly at distances and capturing the drama of the scene along with your child’s expressions. Playgrounds are perfect for this. Just don’t get so far away that you can’t zoom in enough to see the child’s expressions.
6. If you are going to pose your babies using props, make sure it can hold them securely and safely.
7. Your babies need not be dressed in costumes or their best clothes all the time, just make sure they are clean unless you intend to take photos of them coated in cooking flour or mud on their faces… which is very adorable by the way.
8. Try shooting without color. Black & white photos come out very classy and elegant, so if you intend to frame the photos, you will never go wrong with a few well focused black and white images.
9. Remember that babies can easily get distracted, if you caught your baby doing something really cute, be quick in clicking the camera or you might miss the moment. Remember, high resolution digitals can be manually cropped later before printing.
10. Get others, especially other children involved. Have your relatives and siblings who’s voices they are acquainted with make coo-coo or other sounds to make the baby smile or simply talk to the baby to get eye contact with the camera.
There really is nothing like capturing the pure innocence of a child in a photograph.
They grow up so fast so you want to really try to get every precious moment you can preserved on film. You will learn what works best for your baby portrait photography as you go along, and you’ll be very proud each time you get a cute little smile or grumpy face recorded for generations to come.
